Introduction

Cory is your AI-powered browser companion that helps you interact with web content in two powerful ways:

  1. Chat with any webpage - Ask questions, get summaries, analyze content
  2. Rewrite selected text - Get four AI variations of any text you select

What Makes Cory Special

Cory offers 100% local privacy with all conversations and memories stored only in your browser. It provides visual understanding by analyzing both screenshots and text content of pages. The local memory feature remembers your preferences and personal context across sessions. With its dual modes, you get Chat mode for analysis and Co-Writer mode for text editing. Best of all, there's no subscription needed, just bring your own OpenAI API key.

Installation and Setup

Requirements

You'll need the latest version of Chrome or Edge browser, an OpenAI API account, and an active OpenAI API key.

Installation

  1. Install Cory from the Chrome Web Store
  2. The first time you click Cory, you'll be prompted for your API key
  3. Enter your OpenAI API key and save
  4. Start using Cory

Initial Configuration

Right-click Cory icon → Options to access settings where you can configure your API Key, Chat Model for conversational analysis, and Co-Writer Model for text rewriting.

Recommended Models: GPT-4.1 offers a strong balance of performance and cost. GPT-5.1 has the best capabilities but is more expensive. GPT-5 Mini and Nano provide faster, cheaper options.

Getting Started

Three Ways to Use Cory

1. Floating Icon

Look for Cory's icon in the top-right corner of any webpage. Click it to open the chat interface and start asking questions or analyzing the page.

2. Text Selection

Select any text on a webpage, then right-click and choose "Ask Cory" to get four rewrite variations or ask questions about the text.

3. Keyboard Shortcuts in Chat

Use Enter to send messages, Shift+Enter for new lines, Up and Down to navigate through previous prompts, and Esc to close Cory.

Two Modes: Chat vs Co-Writer

Cory has two distinct modes that you can switch between using the toggle switch in the header.

Chat Mode

Purpose: Analyze and understand web content.

Best for: Asking questions about pages, getting summaries and explanations, multi-turn conversations, and page analysis with screenshots.

Features: Includes conversation history, screenshot and text analysis, local memory integration, streaming responses, and a New Chat button to start fresh.

Co-Writer or Editor Mode

Purpose: Rewrite and transform selected text.

Best for: Getting multiple text variations, rewriting in different styles, and quick text transformation workflows.

Features: Shows selected text preview, generates four variations per prompt, provides diff highlighting, enables one-click paste or copy, and includes a custom prompts library.

Chat Mode

How It Works

  1. Open Cory
  2. Type your question or request
  3. Cory analyzes the screenshot, page text, local memory if enabled, and selected text if any
  4. Get streaming AI responses
  5. Continue the conversation with preserved context

Example Questions

Page Analysis: Try asking "What is this page about?", "Summarize the main points", or "Is there contact information on this page?"

Content Understanding: Ask Cory to "Explain this in simpler terms", "What are the pros and cons mentioned?", or "Are there any red flags in this contract?"

With Selected Text: Select text first, then try "Translate this to Spanish", "What does this technical jargon mean?", or "Find errors in this text".

Co-Writer or Editor Mode

How It Works

  1. Select text on any webpage, or start from clipboard content
  2. Open Cory and switch to Co-Writer mode
  3. Review your selected text in the preview area
  4. Enter a prompt or choose from preset prompts
  5. Get four AI-generated variations
  6. Click an option to paste it, or use Copy

Example Workflows

Quick Rewriting: Select a sentence, type "Make this more professional", compare the four options, and choose your favorite.

Style Changes: Try prompts like "Make this casual", "Shorter version", or "More detailed".

Specific Edits: Ask Cory to "Fix grammar", "Use active voice", "Remove jargon", or "Add transition words".

Privacy and Security

What Stays Local

Conversation history, Local Memory, custom prompts, settings, preferences, and your stored API key remain in the browser environment.

What Gets Sent to OpenAI

Prompts and questions, screenshots when enabled, page text when enabled, local memory when enabled, and selected text are sent directly to OpenAI for processing.

Best Practices

  1. Never share your API key
  2. Do not put sensitive data in Local Memory
  3. Be cautious with private pages such as banking or medical records
  4. Uncheck context options when needed
  5. Monitor API usage in the OpenAI dashboard

Troubleshooting

Cory Icon Not Appearing

  1. Wait a moment or refresh the page
  2. Make sure the extension is enabled
  3. Some browser-internal pages block extensions
  4. Try disabling conflicting extensions temporarily

API Key Issues

If you see authentication or quota errors, verify the key, confirm billing on your OpenAI account, and check your usage limits.

No Response or Freezing

  1. Check your internet connection
  2. Give large pages more time
  3. Try a smaller text selection
  4. Disable screenshot for faster responses
  5. Check the browser console for errors

FAQ
